What to Consider if You’re Thinking of Moving During Your Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be an exciting and stressful time – adding the stress of finding a new home and moving during your pregnancy can seem overwhelming. So what are some of the things that you should take into consideration before you begin the process of moving during your pregnancy?

Consult Your Doctor

First and foremost, you need to consult your doctor. While you may feel fine, your doctor is the one to tell you what you are going to be realistic about. One of the common issues that can arise when moving while pregnant is the risk of preterm birth. Along with preterm birth, women who move while pregnant can also increase the risk of babies being born with a low birthrate. If your doctor has any idea that you may be at risk for preterm birth, you need to heed their warning and wait to move until after your pregnancy.

Your doctor can also explain to you what your body is able to do during the moving process. As a general rule, pregnant women who are less than 20 weeks old should avoid lifting anything heavier than 18 pounds if they are living for more than an hour a day. If you are more than 20 weeks along in your pregnancy, that limit should be reduced to 13 pounds. These numbers are important as you will need to have more help. Consider hiring movers or seeking help from family members to prevent any pregnancy complications.

Always Keep Finances at the Forefront

Pregnancy and new homeownership can both put a significant financial strain on you. When moving to a new area, you should look at the average price of homes. When you consider places like Manhattan, for instance, in 2017 the average price of a condo in an existing building was $1.9 million. Along with the mortgage rate, you need to anticipate the required remodeling and updates that you will need to have budgeted for.

Take into account when purchasing an older home you should assume you will be replacing older appliances. One area that often goes overlooked and is important to replace is the water storage tank. A water storage tank has a lifespan of between 10 to 20 years, but you can come across homes that have water storage tanks that haven’t been replaced if the house was built a hundred years ago. Costs like this might be forgotten with all of the stress you are experiencing.

Listen to Your Intuition

Use intuitive parenting, this is the process of listening to your child’s intuitive intelligence through the use of breathing techniques to promote a sense of calm and clarity. This can help when it comes to designing your child’s nursery, as you may be at a loss for what direction to go in.

Select Nursery Furniture Carefully

Once you have your home and begin putting together your nursery, carefully select furniture that fits the space and creates the environment that you want to welcome your baby into.

If you are looking at metal furniture, you need to consider how the material will work. Different metal types require different metalworking fluids. All come into play when you are looking to alter the cooling, lubrication, chipping, and corrosion rates of your metal furniture. Properly assessing these can prolong the lifespan and safety of your nursery furniture.

Locate a New Doctor Ahead of Time

Lastly, you need to be sure that you have found a new doctor before you move. As many doctors have cut-offs for when they will accept a new patient, depending on how far along they are in their pregnancy. This is also important in the event that you face any complications or have any concerns during the moving process.

While it’s not necessarily a bad idea to move during your pregnancy, you’ll have quite a few factors to take into account before moving day arrives. Keep these tips in mind and remember to listen to your doctor’s recommendations to ensure that you are making the right choices for you and your baby.
